Spandex fetishism
Spandex fetishism is the name popularly used to describe a fetishistic attraction to people wearing clothes made of shiny stretch fabrics such as Spandex or, in certain cases, to the garments themselves.
Note: Even though Lycra is INVISTA's trademark for their own brand of spandex fabric, rather than the generic name, many people refer to spandex fetishism as Lycra fetishism.
One reason why spandex and other tight fabrics are fetishised may be that the garment forms a "second skin" that acts as a fetishistic surrogate for the wearer's own skin. Thus, wearers of skin-tight spandex garments may be perceived by the viewer as being naked, or coated in a shiny substance like paint. Many of the stretch fabrics are also shiny and often produced in bright colours, adding further visual stimulus to add to the physical sensations produced by the material. The tightness of the garments may also be viewed as a kind of sexual bondage. The feel and texture of the material may also be appealing.
Spandex fetishism often involves dressing up in the material, or looking at it worn by sexual partners, or fantasies about wearers of skin-tight spandex garments such as athletes (particularly cyclists), acrobats, gymnasts, dancers, swimmers and contortionists.
In comic books, superheroes and superheroines are generally depicted as wearing tight costumes made of spandex or a similar material. Catwoman is a notable example. Fantasies involving superhero figures are commonly associated with spandex fetishism.
All-embracing catsuits or zentai are found in fetishistic contexts, particularly in Japan. They are also often made with gloves and feet attached. Zentai fetishism appears to be related to fantasies of erotic objectification and total enclosure.
The most noted area of this fetish is the superhero/heroine cosplay area where the body costumes are usually made of spandex rather than heavier fabric and materials.
